A minimum order quantity is not a sales tactic. It is the smallest run in which the fixed costs of making your packaging stop dominating the price of each individual piece. Once you can see which costs are charged once and which are charged on every piece, the whole MOQ conversation becomes arithmetic instead of negotiation — and the decision about how much to order in a first run gets much easier to defend.
Why 100, 300, 500 and 1,000 pcs behave differently
Every order carries two kinds of cost. The first kind is charged once, whatever the quantity: the cutting die that gives the structure its shape, a foil or emboss die, the print setup, and the development of the dieline and the physical sample. The second kind is charged on every piece: board or fabric, wrap paper, ink, foil film, ribbon, magnets, insert material, assembly labour and the packing carton.
At 100 pcs, the one-off costs are spread across 100 pieces, so each piece carries a large share of them. At 1,000 pcs the same setup is spread across ten times as many pieces, and the piece price is mostly material and labour. That is the entire reason a 100-piece run costs more per box than a 5,000-piece run of an identical box — not because the factory is unwilling, but because there are fewer pieces to divide the setup by.
The shape of the curve matters as much as the reason for it. The fall is steep at first and then flattens. Going from 300 to 1,000 pcs changes the price dramatically; going from 5,000 to 10,000 pcs changes it only slightly, because by then you are mostly paying for material and only a little for setup. Half of the total achievable saving usually sits in the first step of the ladder.
The curve, in published numbers
Corrugated mailers are the clearest published example, quoted on an identical specification: E-flute, 22×16×8cm, printed inside and out, with a tear strip. Nothing about the product changes between these rows. Only the quantity does.

The same pattern appears on food-grade packaging, which is quoted at $0.70–0.98 per piece at 500 pcs, $0.48–0.68 at 1,000 pcs, and $0.12–0.18 at 10,000+ pcs. Two very different products, one identical curve.
Quantity is not the only lever, and it is rarely the best one. Moving from 1,000 to 5,000 pcs improves the unit price by roughly half, but it also multiplies the money on the table. If your first order is a test, buy the test. The cheapest piece price in the world is expensive if you are still holding the stock a year later.
Which MOQ applies to which structure
The minimum depends on how the structure is made, not on how much the supplier likes your brand. Structures that are assembled by hand from die-cut board are the easiest to run at low volume, because the setup is a die and the labour scales with pieces. Structures made from compliant materials or printed in high-speed processes carry more setup, so they start higher.

The short version, if you only remember one line: rigid boxes from 100 pcs; mailer boxes and paper gift bags from 300 pcs; food-grade boxes, canvas totes and folding cartons from 500 pcs. The rigid family is the outlier, because the industry norm there is 500–1,000 pcs and a 100-piece start is a deliberate choice to let brands validate a structure before committing to a large run.
Sizing a first run you will not be stuck with
A first order has one job: to prove the packaging wrong before it is expensive to change. That means the smallest quantity at which you can judge the structure, the finish and the fit in your own hands, and put a real unit in front of a real customer.
In practice that is 100–300 pcs where the structure allows it — the rigid box family and the tear-strip mailer formats — and 500 pcs where the minimum genuinely is 500, as it is for food-grade boxes, canvas totes and folding cartons. Two things make a small first run worth its higher unit price:
- You learn things a sample cannot tell you. A sample proves the structure. A first run proves how your product behaves in it, how the packaging survives your actual parcel route, and whether the finish photographs the way you imagined.
- The tooling carries over. The die and the print setup you paid for on the first run are the same tooling used on the reorder, so the extra cost of starting small is a one-time premium rather than a permanent one.
What a first run should not be is a production order with the quantity quietly reduced. If the artwork is still moving, if the insert layout is unproven, or if the size has not been tested against the filled product, order the validation quantity and change it before you scale. Resizing or redrawing a structure after a large run usually costs more than the entire first order did.
Two practical habits help. First, get the structural dieline and the 3D mockup before you order anything — they cost you nothing at the start of a project and they catch mistakes while they are still free. Second, approve a physical sample: production takes 12–18 days after sample approval, and sample cost is credited against the bulk order, so there is no reason to skip it.
One-off tooling versus per-piece cost
When you ask a supplier to break down a quote, this is the split you are looking for. Anything in the left column should be paid once and should not be charged again when you reorder the same structure. Anything in the right column scales with quantity, and it is the only column where changing the specification genuinely saves money per unit.

These appear as their own lines on an itemised quote. If a supplier will not show you which charges are one-off, you cannot tell a setup cost from a price rise.

This is where the specification lives, and where a change of material or finish shows up immediately as a different unit price at every quantity.
What a reorder does not pay for
Tooling and dielines do not repeat. Once the die exists and the print setup has been prepared, a reorder of the same structure skips those lines entirely — the reorder is quoted on material, labour and finishing, at the same quantity tiers, without the setup. That is also why we keep your dieline and specification on file: a reorder is a run of a known structure, not a new project.
So a reorder is cheaper than a first order of the same size, and it is shorter to turn around, because nothing has to be designed or approved from scratch. If the specification is unchanged, the approval you gave on the first run generally stands. Change the board, the wrap or the finish and you are buying new setup, which is why it is worth locking the specification before you scale: the structure you validate at 100–500 pcs is the structure you want to be reordering for years.
Seasonality is the other reason to think in reorders rather than one big order. This category runs on two peaks — Q4 for North America and Europe, and Ramadan and Eid for the Middle East and GCC, where Eid gift order volumes have been reported up 152.8% year on year (hidubai, March 2025). Brands that reorder on a known dieline lock their production slots earlier, and their artwork earlier still.
Quantity tier, unit price and cash tied up
The unit price is only half the decision. The other half is how much cash sits in boxes on a shelf before a single one is sold.

As a worked example from the mailer tiers above: a 1,000-piece order at $0.42–0.68 is roughly $420–680 of stock, while a 5,000-piece order at $0.22–0.35 is roughly $1,100–1,750 — that is straight arithmetic on the indicative ranges, before tooling, freight and duties. The unit price is better on the larger order. The question is whether you can move 5,000 units before the design, the season or the product changes.
The honest rule of thumb. Validate at the lowest tier your structure allows. Reorder as it sells. Step up a tier when a reorder would otherwise run out before the next one lands. Buy quantity to avoid a stock-out, not to win a price argument — unsold packaging is the most expensive price per piece there is.
