The 10oz canvas tote your customers keep

A 10oz cotton canvas body, cut to your product, with the handle, gusset and print method chosen around the load it has to carry. The family band is $0.40–1.20 at 500 pcs — the bottom of it is lighter promotional cloth, so read the fabric specification before you compare two quotes.

Overview

About this canvas tote bag

The body is 10oz cotton canvas, roughly 340 gsm, cut to the width, height and gusset you specify and sewn with a reinforced top fold so the handle load is spread across the whole top edge instead of two stitch points. Handles are self-fabric, cotton webbing, or a bar-tacked attachment; the print method follows the artwork — screen print for one to three flat colours in volume, DTG or heat transfer for full-colour detail, embroidery where the mark has to survive washing. Fabric weight, not logo size, dominates the price: enlarging a one-colour print costs very little, because the screen is set up either way.

This is the right choice when the bag has to be reused and carry real weight. At 340 gsm the canvas holds a crease, stands up on a counter, and takes a dense print without the ink showing through as a halo on the reverse — which is why 10oz and 12oz bodies carry the whole corporate and brand-retail segment. The trade-offs are straightforward: a heavier body costs more per piece and occupies more carton volume than a 6oz promotional blank, so freight per bag rises with the fabric, and a quote at the bottom of the family band is usually a lighter cloth or a smaller body rather than a cheaper version of this one. If the programme is decided on unit price alone, buy the give-away blank. If the bag has to last two years, this weight is the floor.

  • 10oz / approx. 340 gsm cotton canvas — the weight the reusable end of the market actually buys
  • Reinforced top fold and bar-tacked handle attachment on every load-bearing handle
  • Print method quoted against your artwork, not the cheapest option available
  • Family band $0.40–1.20 at 500 pcs; the bottom of it is lighter promotional cloth, not a cheaper version of this bag

Variants

Handle, gusset and interior options

Each of these changes the fabric consumption or the sewing time, so each is quoted as its own line rather than bundled into one unit price.

Self-fabric handle

Cut from the same canvas as the body and stitched down the side panel. The cheapest handle that still looks consistent with the bag, and enough for light and medium loads.

Cotton webbing handle

A flat woven tape, usually 25–30mm, set into the top fold. Stronger and more even in the hand than self-fabric, and the standard choice for retail programmes.

Bottom gusset or boxed base

A bottom gusset gives the bag a base so it stands up; adding side gussets creates depth for a boxed product. Both are extra panels, so both are quoted as their own line.

Inner pocket or divider

A patch pocket or a full divider turns the tote into an everyday bag. Priced per piece, and worth it mainly on gifting and staff programmes.

Materials

Fabric options and what each one costs you

Cotton and canvas are sold by weight per unit area, so two bags with identical artwork can differ several times over on cloth alone. Oz per square yard and gsm measure the same thing: one ounce is about 34 gsm.

Ask for the gsm on the fabric specification, not only the ounce figure, because nominal ratings vary between mills.

OptionWhat it means
6oz cotton, approx. 200 gsmThe give-away weight: cheapest body, prints flat colour well, but thin, short-lived and it collapses on a shelf. Fine for a one-off event, wrong for a brand programme.
10oz cotton canvas, approx. 340 gsmThe default reusable choice. Holds a crease, carries a loaded bag without the handle pulling out, and takes a dense print without ink show-through.
12oz cotton canvas, approx. 405 gsmA noticeably stiffer cloth for wide-bodied and gift-grade totes. Costs more per piece and more in freight, and is priced in the separate heavy band at $2.84–6.37.
Jute and laminated linenA coarser, more structured look with a laminated or printed front panel, at $0.98–1.85 at 500 pcs. Rougher in the hand than cotton, so it reads craft and heritage rather than clean retail.
Recycled or organic cottonAvailable on request where a fibre claim matters to your market. Price and availability move with the mill, and we confirm the certificate against the exact fabric in your specification.

Best for

Who buys this weight, and why

Brand retail and D2C

The bag is the shop the customer takes home: it carries the purchase, gets reused, and is seen in public again. 10oz canvas survives that exposure; a promotional blank does not.

Corporate gifting and onboarding

A canvas tote with an embroidered mark is the format that ends up kept on a desk. Annual budgets mean the artwork is already approved when the next order comes round.

Events, conferences and trade shows

Flat-packed canvas ships in small carton volume, takes a bold screen-printed identity on site, and holds a catalogue, a bottle and a laptop without splitting.

Promotional distributors

The standard cotton tote is a catalogue staple with a published band, so a distributor can quote quickly and still upsell fabric weight when the client wants something that lasts.

Wellness, hospitality and subscription add-ons

A printed tote extends the brand past the first delivery. Keep it in 10oz where it has to feel like a gift, or drop to the lighter cotton weight where it is a free addition rather than a product.

Sizing

Sizes and how we set them

Sizing is a load and freight decision before it is a design decision. The body has to fit the product with room for a hand, the gusset has to hold the depth of the box or bottle, and the handle drop has to clear a shoulder without dragging the base along the ground.

Because every dimension changes fabric consumption, we quote a cut size rather than a nominal size: tell us the product and the pack and we will propose a cut that fits.

DimensionGuidance
Body, flat retail (A4)Around 320×380mm for a flat purchase, a book or a folded garment. Below about 300mm wide the printed panel starts to look cramped.
Body, everyday toteAbout 380×420mm is the common all-purpose size: a laptop, a lunch box and a bottle, or a standard grocery run.
Gusset depth60–90mm covers most boxed products; 100mm and above is for bottle carriers and multi-item packs. Each extra 10mm is more fabric and more sewing.
Handle drop180–220mm for a hand-carried retail bag, 260mm and up for a shoulder bag. A long drop on a heavy load needs a stronger attachment, so the handle material changes with it.
Oversize bodiesAbove roughly 450×450mm the bag stops behaving like a tote: fabric consumption climbs, the body needs a heavier cloth to hold its shape, and carton volume rises faster than the piece count. Oversize is the single biggest driver of freight per bag.
Flat versus folded packingFlat-packed bags compress best and suit a light, flexible product; a structured or gusseted bag is folded to its gusset width. Ask for carton dimensions and packed volume with the quote and compare landed cost, not ex-works price.

FAQ

Questions we get before a tote order

The answers a supplier usually softens. Fabric weight and handle construction decide almost everything, so start there.

What does a custom canvas tote actually cost?
The published family band is $0.40–1.20 a piece at 500 pcs, and that spread is not print size — it is cloth. The bottom is a blank or near-blank 6oz promotional body; a 10oz canvas tote with a screen-printed mark and a reinforced handle sits higher in the band. Heavyweight 12oz wide-bodied totes are a separate band at $2.84–6.37. All of it is indicative planning money rather than a quotation: size, fabric weight, print method, handle, gusset, packing and Incoterm each move the number.
How long will the bag last?
Longer than the campaign, if the fabric and the handle suit the load. A tote fails at the handle attachment, not in the middle of the panel, so we specify a reinforced top fold and a bar-tack at each end of the handle, sized to the weight you tell us the bag has to carry. Say what goes in it — a bottle, a hardback, two kilos — at quoting stage and the sample is built to that load.
When is a canvas tote the wrong choice?
When the bag is a give-away that will be binned, or when the whole decision is unit price. At that point 10oz canvas is the wrong material: a non-woven or light cotton promotional blank does the same short-term job for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the freight. Order the canvas tote when the bag is meant to be kept, reused and seen — that is what the extra fabric buys.
Can you print a full-colour logo on canvas?
Yes, but the method matters. DTG or heat transfer handles photographic colour and fine detail on a shorter run; screen print stays cheaper for one to three flat colours at volume; embroidery gives a raised mark that outlasts the bag. We quote two methods against the same artwork so you can see the difference, and if a method is wrong for the design we will say so before you order.

Heavyweight 12oz Canvas ToteLead with this

Heavyweight 12oz Canvas Tote

A heavyweight, wide-bodied canvas bag with reinforced handles and full-colour printing or embroidery. This is the end of the range where fabric weight, print coverage and handle engineering are all paid for, and where corporate gifting and brand retail programmes reorder on an annual cycle.

Cotton Drawstring PouchBudget line

Cotton Drawstring Pouch

A folded, pack-flat cotton pouch with a drawstring closure for jewellery, candles and apparel. Low unit cost and small carton volume make it the cheapest way to put a brand into a customer's hands, and a natural add-on when a tote order is already going into the same carton.

Jute Shopper BagGift bag feel

Jute Shopper Bag

Jute and laminated linen shoppers sit above the cotton line at $0.98–1.85 a piece: heavier and more structured than a cotton tote, and increasingly bought as a gift bag with a printed brand panel rather than as a give-away. It reads craft and heritage, which is either the point of the brief or the reason to avoid it.
