Overview

About this compostable mailer

The plastic in a normal padded mailer is not the outer layer — it is the bubble film inside, and it is the reason the whole envelope has to go to general waste. This construction replaces that film with a honeycomb paper core bonded between two kraft sheets, so outer, padding and seal are all paper.

It does not cushion like bubble film. A honeycomb core absorbs a flat drop well but gives less protection against a sharp corner than an air-filled film, so for fragile or heavy items we will steer you back to a corrugated mailer box. That is a real limit of the material, not a sales caveat.

Padding weight

A heavier honeycomb core protects more and costs more. Tell us what breaks and we will size the core to that, rather than defaulting to the heaviest sheet.

Peel-and-seal strip

Convenient, and the part that most often is not compostable. If the strip matters to you, ask us what it is made of before you put a logo on the claim.

Custom size

Cut to your own dimensions if the standard codes leave too much void fill — void fill is cost, weight and emissions all at once.

FAQ

Before you order a compostable mailer

Compostability is a regulated claim, so these answers are about evidence.

Can you call this mailer biodegradable?
We can state what it is made of and which standard it has been tested against — EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 — for the specific construction you order. We avoid the bare word ‘biodegradable’ on its own, because it is regulated in the EU, restricted in several US states and unprovable as written. If your market requires a particular wording, send us the rule and we will write the page to match it.
Is the certificate for you or for the mailer?
For the mailer — and for that exact construction. Compostability certificates attach to a tested article, not to a supplier, so a mailer in one size and core weight is not automatically covered by a certificate issued for another. We tell you which one your order carries.
Is it home compostable or industrial?
Those are different standards and different claims. Industrial composting is the usual basis for EN 13432 and ASTM D6400. Do not assume a home-composting claim — ask, and we will tell you what the certificate actually covers.
Is this the same thing as a compostable bubble mailer #000?
The #000 code is the smallest size in the standard padded-mailer series, and most buyers searching for a compostable bubble mailer are replacing a plastic one at that size. This is that mailer with the bubble taken out — same size codes, the same flat-drop protection, paper padding instead of air film. It is not a drop-in for point-impact protection; for that, see our corrugated mailer box.
Is it as protective as a bubble mailer?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. It handles a flat drop better than a sharp corner impact. For fragile items we recommend a corrugated mailer box instead.
