The cheapest handle there is — and the first one to fail

No separate handle at all: the grip is punched through the paper itself. Flat to ship, cheapest to make, and the weakest under load. Published factory numbers put the basic carrier at $0.10–0.22 a piece at 500 pcs, and that is where this build lives.

Overview

About this die-cut handle paper bag

A die-cut handle bag is a paper carrier with two shaped apertures punched through the top panels. There is no tape, rope or ribbon to attach, which removes a component and a process from the build: the bag is cut, creased, printed and glued in one pass, and it folds completely flat. Material is normally uncoated kraft or a light coated stock, sometimes with a laminated panel for full-colour print, and the aperture is reinforced with a turned-over or doubled top edge on better grades.

It is the right choice for light purchases where the bag is a way of carrying something small out of a shop: cosmetics, a single accessory, a pastry box, a promotional item. It is the wrong choice for anything with weight or corners. The handle is punched paper, so a heavy load concentrates all the stress on two narrow edges and the paper tears from the aperture outward; there is no way to reinforce it that does not turn the bag into a different, more expensive product. Commercially it is the cheapest end of the paper bag market, priced in the same $0.10–0.22 band as the basic kraft carrier. Use it where the bag is a cost line; do not ask it to carry a brand or a bottle.

  • Handle punched through the paper — no tape, rope or ribbon component
  • Folds completely flat: the lowest carton volume of any bag in this family
  • Reinforced top edge on heavier grades to slow aperture tearing
  • Basic carrier band $0.10–0.22 at 500 pcs; the cheapest end of the market

Variants

How a die-cut bag is upgraded

Only the top-edge treatment and the base actually change how the bag performs; everything else is decoration on a low-cost carrier.

Standard die-cut aperture

The cheapest handle in the range: a punched shape with a rounded edge. Adequate for a light box or a single item.

Doubled or turned-over top edge

A folded top edge that doubles the paper around the aperture and slows tearing. The cheapest reliability upgrade on this format.

Laminated print panel

A printed and filmed panel on a die-cut bag, so the artwork looks premium even though the handle is basic. Common on cosmetics and pharmacy retail.

Die-cut plus a board base insert

A rigid base so a boxed or cylindrical item does not crease the bottom. It does not strengthen the handle, only the base.

Materials

Paper grades, and when to change the handle

On a die-cut bag the paper grade is doing the work of the handle. That is the single most useful thing to understand before choosing this format.

OptionWhat it means
Uncoated kraft, 100–120gsmThe cheapest possible printed paper bag. Fine for a pastry, a card box or a single light item, and it will not survive much more.
Uncoated kraft, 130–150gsmMore body around the aperture, which is what keeps a die-cut handle usable for longer. Still a commodity bag at commodity pricing.
Coated white stockA cleaner surface that shows a brand colour faithfully, at a small premium over brown kraft. Useful when the print has to look deliberate on a cheap bag.
Laminated art paperMoves the bag up to the printed shopping band at $0.10–0.50 at 500 pcs with a film over the print. The handle is still punched paper, so the load limit does not change.
Flat tape or twisted paper handle insteadThe correct answer where the load is real. Both cost more and both carry more, and both take the bag out of the cheapest band.

Best for

Where a die-cut handle is enough

Cosmetics and pharmacy retail

Light, boxed products bought in small quantities. The bag is a cost line, and a printed panel on a cheap die-cut carrier is usually enough.

Bakeries and food retail

Pastry boxes and small food items, where a flat, stackable bag matters more than load capacity and the purchase leaves with the customer.

Boutique and accessory retail

A single item, a scarf or a pair of earrings. The bag is presentation, and the die-cut aperture is acceptable because the load is trivial.

Bulk promotional distribution

The cheapest printed bag available for high-volume handouts, with the same caveat as any give-away: expect it to be used once.

Low-cost insert inside a larger pack

Used as an inner carrier inside a mailer or a rigid box, where the bag is not carried by the handle at all.

Sizing

Sizes and how we set them

Die-cut bags are usually the smallest format in a range, because the load limit and the size limit move together: the bigger the bag, the more the customer will put in it, and the faster the aperture tears.

DimensionGuidance
Small retailAround 150×70×200mm to 200×90×250mm covers cosmetics, pastries and small accessories. This is the natural home of the format.
MediumUp to roughly 250×110×300mm, with a doubled top edge. Beyond this size the aperture starts to be the limiting factor on the load.
Aperture size and positionThe aperture has to be hands-width and set below the top edge with enough paper above it to spread the load. Moving it lower reduces tearing.
Gusset depth versus capacity60–90mm is enough for a boxed product; a deeper gusset adds capacity but also encourages heavier loading, which this handle does not support.
Handle drop equivalentThere is no drop to specify — the hand sits at the top edge of the bag. That is one reason the format ships so flat and costs so little.
FreightThe one clear advantage: the bag folds completely flat with no handle component, so carton volume per piece is the lowest in the paper range. Ask for packed volume and compare landed cost.

FAQ

The limits of a punched-paper handle

It is the cheapest bag we quote. These are the two situations where it stops being appropriate.

What can a die-cut handle bag actually hold?
A light purchase and nothing more. The handle is punched paper, so a heavy load concentrates stress on two narrow edges and the bag tears from the aperture outward. A doubled top edge and a heavier grade slow that, but they do not change the principle. If the product has weight, the right answer is flat tape, twisted paper or a rope handle.
Why is this the cheapest paper bag?
Because there is no handle component to buy or attach. The bag is cut, creased, printed and glued — the aperture is part of the die. That places it in the same $0.10–0.22 band as the basic kraft carrier at 500 pcs, which is the commodity end of the paper bag market. Add a laminated panel and the artwork costs rise, but the handle cost stays the same.
When is the die-cut handle the wrong choice?
As soon as the bag has to carry anything with weight or a corner. It is also wrong for gifting and premium retail presentation, where the handle is the first thing the customer touches and a punched aperture reads as takeaway. If either applies, specify a tape, twisted paper or ribbon handle instead — we will quote the difference rather than let you discover it in a season of split bags.
Can the bag be printed full colour?
Yes, on a laminated or coated panel, but you are then putting premium print on a low-cost handle. That can be the right call for cosmetics or pharmacy retail where the visual matters and the load does not. Send the artwork and we will show you how it proofs at final size before sampling.

Kraft Paper Carrier BagVolume line

Kraft Paper Carrier Bag

Uncoated kraft with a single-colour print and a flat tape, twisted paper or die-cut handle. Constant demand from takeaway, grocery and give-away programmes and the most price-competitive corner of the paper bag market, quoted honestly as the commodity it is.

Rope-Handle Paper BagLoad rated

Rope-Handle Paper Bag

A rope or cotton-rope handle threaded through a folded, glued and tape-reinforced top edge, on a printed paper body with a board base. Rougher and more workwear than ribbon, and the handle to specify when the bag has to carry real weight retail.

Laminated Art Paper BagMid tier

Laminated Art Paper Bag

Printed art paper with a lamination film bonded over the print, giving full colour, a protective surface and a hand-feel that kraft cannot match. It is the mid-tier build between a commodity kraft carrier and a foiled ribbon-handle gift bag, and the point where a paper bag starts to work as retail presentation.
