A magnetic box with a tray cut around your product

The magnetic shell from our standard rigid range, with an insert die-cut to the product's own outline so nothing moves in transit and everything sits at the height you want it seen. The shell is priced on the magnetic band (indicative $1.50–2.30/pc at 500 pcs); the tray is quoted as its own line, because material and cutting drive it more than quantity does.

Overview

About this magnetic box with foam insert tray

An insert turns a box into a fitted case. The tray is die-cut to your product's outline, usually leaving 5–8mm of foam compression so the product is held rather than loose, and it sets the height at which the product sits — flush with the rim, slightly proud for a lifted presentation, or recessed under a printed platform. For anything with several components (bottle and pipette, watch and tools, phone and cable) an insert is the difference between a box of parts and a considered set.

The honest cost position: the shell is a standard magnetic rigid box and is priced on the same band, but the insert is the largest single cost driver inside the box and it does not get much cheaper with volume, because the material and the die-cutting dominate. A folded paper or card platform is the cheapest tray; a velvet-wrapped EVA foam tray with cut-outs for several components is the premium end. Both are quoted as separate lines against the same shell, so you can see exactly what the tray costs before you commit.

  • Tray die-cut to your product, not to a generic blank
  • EVA foam, velvet-wrapped foam, suede-effect or folded paper platform
  • Multi-cavity layouts for sets and kits
  • Ribbon lift tab under the product if fingers need to reach it
  • Insert priced as its own line against the magnetic shell

Variants

Configurations we build most often

Velvet-wrapped EVA tray

The premium default for jewellery and gifting: foam for structure, velvet for the surface the customer actually touches. Smooth, suede-effect and crushed velvet finishes price differently.

Bare EVA foam, die-cut

Same engineering, matte industrial finish. Common in electronics and cosmetics where a printed platform covers the foam anyway, and cheaper than wrapping it.

Folded paper platform

A card platform with cut-outs, scored and folded rather than foam-cut. The cheapest way to hold a product in position, and fully recyclable — but it gives less cushioning and a flatter feel.

Multi-cavity layout

Two or more cut-outs for a set: bottle plus pipette, watch plus tools, candle plus matches. Each additional cavity adds cutting and hand-fitting time.

Ribbon lift tab

A ribbon or paper tab under the product so it can be lifted out of a deep cut-out. Worth specifying wherever the foam grips more than half the product height.

Printed platform / false bottom

A printed card layer over the tray, with the product seen through a window or a cut-out. Turns the first thing the customer sees into brand surface.

Materials

What the tray is made of — and what that costs you

The shell material menu is the same as our standard magnetic box. The decisions that change the quote are on the inside.

OptionWhat it means
EVA foam, die-cutThe standard engineering tray: firm, light, holds a shape and cuts cleanly. Available in a range of densities and colours; denser foam grips better but is harder to lift the product out of.
Velvet-wrapped EVAFoam laminated with velvet or suede-effect fabric. The premium surface for jewellery and gifting; adds material and hand work, so it is the most expensive tray option.
Suede-effect or flocked foamA softer, less shiny surface than velvet at a lower cost. Reads well under warm lighting and photographs without the glare velvet can throw.
Folded paper / card platformScored and folded board, often printed. Cheap, light and plastic-free; less cushioning, and cut-outs cannot grip a heavy product the way foam does.
Moulded pulpRecycled fibre tray designed around the product. A strong sustainability story, but the tooling is a real commitment and the surface is not a premium touch surface.
Corrugated fitmentCorrugated board folded into a cradle. Very cheap, very light, and appropriate for larger or heavier items — it protects rather than presents.

Best for

Products that need a tray, not just a box

Skincare sets and routines

Two or three components of different heights held in separate cavities, so the set opens as a set rather than a bag of items.

Fragrance and perfume

A heavy glass bottle needs a cut-out that grips the shoulder, not a paper insert that lets it move — and velvet keeps the glass from scuffing.

Watches and small metal goods

Hard, heavy and scratch-prone. A wrapped tray holds the item away from the board and controls how it sits for the first look.

Electronics and accessories

Device plus cable plus pins, each in its own cavity, with a printed platform carrying setup instructions or a QR code.

Candles and home fragrance

Heavy, breakable and often sold with a lid or a tool. Foam stops movement and keeps the jar off the box walls.

Corporate and PR kits

Mixed contents with a printed overview layer; the tray is what makes a kit feel assembled rather than packed.

Sizing

Tray sizing: the millimetres that decide the feel

The box is sized from the tray, and the tray from the product. Send the product's outer dimensions per component and we will set both — but these are the numbers to think about before you brief us.

DimensionGuidance
Product clearance in foamAllow 5–8mm total on a foam cut-out so the foam compresses around the product. Less and the product is hard to seat; more and it rattles.
Tray to wall clearanceLeave 1–2mm between the tray edge and the interior wall so the inserted tray does not bow the box. A tray that is cut exactly to the interior is a common reason a lid starts to sit tight.
Presentation heightProduct flush with the rim reads calm; 5–10mm proud reads celebratory. Decide this early — it sets the box depth and therefore the board and freight.
Deep cut-outsWhere foam grips more than half the product height, add a ribbon lift tab. It is a small line item that prevents the most common customer complaint.
Tray thickness10–15mm foam for light products, 20mm and up for heavy or irregular items. Every millimetre of foam becomes a millimetre of box depth and a millimetre on the freight bill.

FAQ

Questions about inserts and dies

The two things that decide tray cost and lead time, answered plainly.

How much does the insert add to the unit price?
It depends almost entirely on material and cutting, not on quantity — which is why we quote it as a separate line rather than folding it into the box price. A folded paper platform and a velvet-wrapped multi-cavity foam tray differ by a multiple, and both are available on the same shell. Ask for the itemised quote and you can trade the tray against the finishing on the outside.
Do I need to send a physical sample?
For a single-cavity tray, dimensions plus a photo are usually enough and we send a sample for you to test. For multi-cavity layouts, or anything with a curved or irregular shape, a physical product is much safer — an insert that fits in a drawing and not in the hand is the most expensive kind of mistake.
Is foam a problem for plastic-free or recyclable claims?
It can be. EVA foam is durable and reusable but not paper-recyclable, and moulded pulp carries both a tooling cost and a different surface feel. If your packaging brief requires a paper stream, the folded paper platform or a corrugated fitment is the honest answer, and we will say so rather than describe foam as eco-friendly.
This format is the wrong choice if…
…your product changes size between orders, or the box is a low-cost retail container, or the contents are simple enough that a folded paper platform does the job. A die-cut tray is worth its cost when it fixes a real problem — movement, presentation height, several components — and it is dead weight when it does not.
Can the tray be supplied loose?
Yes. If you assemble or pack locally, we can ship the foam or the platform flat and loose alongside flat-packed boxes, which saves a substantial amount of freight volume. Ask for both packed and loose options on the quote.

Magnetic Rigid Gift BoxBestseller

Magnetic Rigid Gift Box

A rigid greyboard shell with magnets set into lid and base, so the box pulls shut and holds with no visible closure. The strongest reveal in the rigid family and the structure most D2C beauty, fragrance and gifting brands pick for a launch or a gift set — at roughly 25–30% above the same box in lid & base.

Sliding Drawer Gift BoxReveal

Sliding Drawer Gift Box

A rigid sleeve with a sliding inner drawer, so the product arrives on a tray before any of the packaging structure is seen. The most theatrical reveal in the rigid family, and the format jewellery, watches, fragrance and electronics accessories use when the product should appear first. It is also the hardest of the three structures to build well — a drawer either glides or it does not.

Wine & Spirits Bottle BoxBottle fit

Wine & Spirits Bottle Box

A tall rigid box for a single bottle: friction-fit lid and base, with a cradle insert that holds the bottle at the shoulder and the base so it cannot move in transit. Priced on the lid & base band; the extra board a bottle box needs and the cradle insert are quoted as their own lines.
