A magnetic rigid box makes the opening part of the product

Two rigid boards with magnets set into the lid and the base, wrapped edge to edge so the closure disappears and the whole surface stays available for your artwork. Indicative $1.50–2.30/pc at 500 pcs; foil, embossing, inserts and flat-packing are each quoted as their own line.

Overview

About this magnetic rigid gift box

A magnetic rigid box is built from two separately wrapped rigid pieces: a base tray and a lid, each turned from greyboard and then wrapped in printed or specialty paper. The magnets sit recessed inside the board, so there is no clasp, no ribbon and no visible mechanical part — the lid simply pulls shut and holds. That is why the format dominates the premium end of gifting: nothing interrupts your artwork, the lid can be lifted off with one hand, and the box can be closed again and reused without looking tired.

It is the right choice when the box itself is part of the product experience — a launch kit, a PR package, a bridal or corporate gift, a subscription box whose second order depends on how the first one opened. The trade-off is cost and freight. Magnets, the extra wrapping pass on the lid and the hand assembly make a magnetic box roughly 25–30% more expensive than a lid & base box at the same size and specification, and an assembled rigid box occupies far more container volume than a flat-packed one. If your box is a retail container produced in six figures, lid & base is usually the better spend; magnetic is for the pieces you want photographed.

  • Hidden magnets — no visible closure anywhere on the box
  • Wrapped or printed to your dimensions, no stock die line
  • Foil, emboss, soft-touch lamination and spot UV can be combined
  • Interior printing and custom inserts quoted as separate lines
  • Collapsible version available to cut freight volume

Variants

Configurations we build most often

Ribbon pull

A satin or grosgrain ribbon sits under the lid edge so the box lifts cleanly with one finger. The cheapest opening aid and the one most photographed; ribbon colour and width are its own line.

Tab-and-slot lid

Instead of a ribbon, the lid carries a printed tab that slots into the base. No loose component to fall off in a gift bag, and the interior stays completely clean.

Plain lift-off lid

Magnets only, no opening aid. The most restrained version and the one that best suits a minimal label or a single foil mark.

Printed interior

A pattern, a message or a care instruction printed inside the lid and on the base. A separate press pass, so it is quoted as one line you can delete.

Two-tier / book-style build

An internal platform splits the box into two levels — product below, documents or accessories above. Adds board, assembly time and depth; quoted as its own line.

Collapsible (fold-flat) shell

The same exterior with a folding wall so the box ships flat and snaps up on arrival. Unit price is similar, but freight volume can fall substantially.

Materials

Board and wrap: what the choice actually changes

A rigid box is only two materials — a greyboard core and a wrap — so nearly every quotation question comes back to these two decisions.

OptionWhat it means
1.5mm greyboardThe lightest board that still reads as rigid and premium. Lowest weight and freight cost; can feel thin above roughly 30cm on the longest side.
2.0mm greyboardMore mass, a heavier feel in the hand and better dimensional stability on large lids. Adds weight to every unit you ship.
Double-wall or laminated boardTwo boards laminated for very large or heavy contents. Noticeably dearer and it costs freight volume — use it only where the product demands it.
Coated art paper wrapThe cheapest way to get full-colour artwork and a clean litho print. Needs lamination to resist scuffing, so plan matte or soft-touch as a second line.
Textured or linen-embossed stockGives the box a paper grain you can feel before you see the print. Costs a little more, and fine foil detail sits differently on a textured surface.
Leatherette / touch PU wrapA synthetic leather-look surface for gift and jewellery hardware. The most expensive wrap option and the hardest to print on directly — logos usually go on as foil or an applied label.

Best for

Where a magnetic box earns its premium

Beauty & skincare

Serums, creams and sets are opened, filmed and posted. A closure-free lid keeps the frame clean and the box is reused as a drawer organiser.

Fragrance & candles

The product is heavy and breakable, so the box needs board strength and a fitted tray; the magnetic lid makes the second open as easy as the first.

Jewellery & watches

Small, high-value contents need a box that looks worth more than the packaging spend. A lid that lifts off cleanly reads as retail-grade.

Corporate & PR gifting

One-off runs of 100–500 pcs with printed interiors and personalised inserts — the format where a 100 pc MOQ actually matters.

D2C launch and subscription kits

The unboxing is the marketing. A rigid magnetic shell survives courier transit and can be re-closed for returns.

Ramadan, Eid and Q4 gifting

Two seasonal peaks a year; gold foil on a matte or soft-touch wrap is the request we receive most for these programmes.

Sizing

Sizing, clearance and why oversize hurts

Rigid boxes are made to your product, which means the size you send us is the size you get — and a few millimetres either way changes both the freight bill and the way the box feels. Send the product, or a drawing with the product's real outer dimensions, and we will set the box size and the insert clearance.

DimensionGuidance
Smallest sensible sizeBelow roughly 60×60×20mm the wrapped board start to dominate the proportions and the hand assembly cost per unit barely falls — a folding carton is usually the more sensible format at that scale.
Insert clearanceAllow 3–5mm total clearance around a rigid product and 5–8mm on foam, so the tray compresses and the product does not rattle. Every millimetre of interior space is board you pay for twice — once in material, once in freight.
Depth versus footprintA shallow box (under 40mm) holds its shape well and reads as confident; a deep, narrow box needs thicker board or an internal platform, because the walls have more leverage on the lid.
Lid overlapThe lid skirt is normally 15–25mm past the base, deeper for tall boxes. A short skirt on a deep base is the most common reason a sample feels loose.
Oversize and freightRigid boxes ship assembled unless you choose a collapsible version. A box 10mm larger on all three sides across a full container load is a real cost, so we quote the size you need rather than rounding up to a convenient number.

FAQ

What buyers ask before committing

Including the cases where we tell you this format is the wrong choice.

Can the box be drop-shipped to my customers, or does it need an outer carton?
A rigid magnetic box is a presentation box, not a shipping box. It needs an outer carton for courier transit — we quote a plain corrugated overbox or a printed mailer alongside it. If the parcel is going to be handed to a courier and nothing else, a corrugated mailer is both cheaper and safer, and we will say so.
Is the magnetic version worth 25–30% over a lid & base box?
Only where the opening is part of the experience. The premium buys a controlled reveal and a lid that stays shut in a gift bag. If the box is a retail container produced in volume and opened once by a shop assistant, lid & base delivers most of the perceived quality for less. Many brands run lid & base on the standard line and magnetic on the gift line, off the same artwork.
This format is the wrong choice if…
…you need the lowest possible landed cost at high volume, or the box has to survive a courier network unboxed, or your product is under about 60mm and the assembly cost never drops. In those cases a lid & base box, a folding carton or a corrugated mailer will do the same job for less money, and we would rather quote you that than sell you a magnetic box you do not need.
How are finishes and inserts priced?
As separate lines. Foil is priced by stamped area, not by logo count; embossing needs a die; soft-touch lamination is quoted per unit of surface; an insert is priced by material and by how much die-cutting it needs. You get the itemised quote, so you can delete a line and see exactly what it was worth.
What do you need from me for an accurate quote?
Product outer dimensions or a physical sample, quantity, the country it ships to and your artwork or a reference of the look you want. That is enough for an itemised price and a 3D mockup with your branding; the physical sample comes after you approve the structure.

Magnetic Box with Foam Insert TrayPremium

Magnetic Box with Foam Insert Tray

A magnetic rigid shell with a die-cut insert tray — EVA foam, velvet-wrapped foam or a folded paper platform — built to your product's own outline. The tray does the engineering work: it sets the presentation height, stops movement in transit and decides how the product reads when the lid comes off. Insert priced as a separate line.

Lid & Base Rigid BoxCost-optimised

Lid & Base Rigid Box

A two-piece rigid box: a base tray plus a lid that sits over it with a friction fit. No magnets, no moving parts, no visible mechanism — which is exactly why it is the cheapest of the three core rigid structures and the one that scales. Around 25–30% below a magnetic box at the same size and specification.

Foldable Magnetic Gift BoxFreight saver

Foldable Magnetic Gift Box

A collapsible version of our magnetic rigid box: the walls fold down and the base locks up, so assembled volume is not paid for in the container. Same reveal and same finishing menu as the standard magnetic box, with a dedicated folding die quoted as its own line — the unit price sits on the magnetic band.
