Overview

About this rsc shipping box

An RSC — a regular slotted container — is the standard four-flap shipping case: top and bottom flaps meeting in the middle, assembled with tape, and made in whatever size your product needs. The specification question is almost always board grade rather than design. Single wall, most often B-flute, is right for the majority of parcels; double wall is for cartons that travel alone, carry weight or get stacked in a container without support. Right-sizing is the whole game with this box. Carriers bill dimensional weight, so the empty volume in a shipper is a charge you pay on every parcel, and because a shipper also sets your pallet footprint, oversizing it costs you twice: once in freight and again in container or pallet space on the inbound leg.

It suits sellers whose packaging is a logistics decision: marketplace sellers, fulfilment-house clients, brands shipping to a 3PL, and anyone consolidating bulk cartons to a warehouse. It does not attempt to be an experience. An unprinted shipper arrives looking like a parcel, and if the customer is going to see the packaging, the answer is a branded mailer — either as the outer box where the product allows, or as an inner box inside the shipper. The other trade-off to know is that RSC cartons are quoted on size and flute rather than from a published ladder, because the board area of a large carton varies so much: the figure above is a planning reference for a right-sized shipper at the 3,000 pc tier of this range's ladder, and the real number follows the size, the board grade and the volume.

  • Single wall as standard; double wall where the carton travels alone or carries weight
  • Right-sized to the product and the pallet, which is where the landed saving sits
  • Barcodes, FNSKU labels and carton marking prepared for FBA, 3PL or your own facility
  • One or two colour flexo stamp available, or supplied unprinted
  • RSC sizes are quoted on size and flute, so the figure shown is a planning reference

Variants

Board grades and shipper configurations

Shippers are specified backwards from the journey: what is inside, how it is stacked, how far it travels and who receives it.

Single wall B-flute

The standard shipper for most parcels: enough protection for a normally packed product, at the lowest board cost. Trade-off: it needs void fill and does not like being stacked unsupported.

Double wall

For cartons that travel alone, carry weight or get stacked in a container. Trade-off: more board cost and more carton volume, which can change your pallet count.

Right-sized RSC against your pallet

A size worked back from the pallet footprint and the stacking height rather than from the product alone. Trade-off: it may not be the smallest possible box for one item, but it is usually the cheapest per pallet.

One or two colour flexo stamp

A logo, a handling mark or a channel requirement printed directly on the board. Trade-off: it does not change the fact that this is a shipper, and full-colour artwork belongs on a mailer.

Die-cut shipper

A tray, a self-locking carton or a custom shape where a standard RSC wastes space or needs too much fill. Trade-off: a die and a higher unit cost than an RSC.

Unprinted stock shipper

Where the carton is internal-only and the cheapest possible protection is the whole requirement. Trade-off: no branding anywhere, and no size flexibility beyond what is quoted.

Materials

Board grades and liners for shippers

On this structure the material is bought for one job: getting the product there intact at the lowest landed cost. Everything else is decoration, and decoration belongs on the mailer.

Shippers are not food-contact packaging. Where they carry food, cosmetics or anything with a contact requirement, the board, coating and ink need a specification change and the destination market's declarations — tell us at brief stage.

OptionWhat it means
Single wall B-fluteThe workhorse board of e-commerce logistics: enough strength for a normally packed parcel at the lowest cost. Trade-off: needs void fill and does not tolerate unsupported stacking.
Single wall E-fluteA thinner, lighter board for small and light shippers. Trade-off: less protection, so it suits items that are already packed in their own retail box.
Double wall (BC or EB)Two flutes or two liners for strength where the carton carries the journey alone. Trade-off: cost and volume — measure the pallet again after you change grade.
Kraft linerThe standard liner for shipping board and the most cost-effective. Trade-off: it scuffs and shows handling marks more than a white liner, which does not matter on an internal carton.
White-top linerUsed where a printed mark or a label has to read clearly on the board. Trade-off: a small cost premium that is rarely worth it on a pure shipper.
Water-based or moisture-resistant treatmentFor humid routes or cold-chain adjacent shipping, where board can lose strength in transit. Trade-off: it is a specification change quoted separately, and some treatments affect repulpability.

Best for

Where an RSC is the right box

Marketplace sellers

Cartons that go into a fulfilment centre have to be right-sized, labelled and packed to the channel's rules. Getting that wrong costs more than the box ever will.

Brands shipping to a 3PL or warehouse

Bulk cartons consolidated for the inbound leg, where pallet utilisation and carton strength matter more than any print.

Oversized and multi-item orders

Where a mailer cannot hold the order and protection is the priority — usually with void fill and a double-wall grade.

Homeware, furniture flat-packs and hardware

Heavier items that need board strength, corner protection and a size that matches the pallet rather than the product alone.

B2B and wholesale despatch

Trades and retailers receiving stock cartons, where a printed handling mark and a correctly sized carton do the communicating.

Sizing

Right-sizing against dimensional weight

Carriers bill dimensional weight, so the empty volume in a shipper is a charge on every parcel — and because the same carton sets your pallet footprint, oversizing it is paid for twice. Give us the product's packed dimensions, the stacking height you expect and the pallet you use, and we will quote a size worked back from those rather than forward from the product alone. In our experience that conversation saves more than any negotiation on the unit price.

RSC cartons are quoted on size and board grade rather than from a published ladder, because the board area of a large carton varies so much. The figure shown above is a planning reference at the 3,000 pc tier of this range's published ladder for a right-sized shipper; labelling, printing and moisture treatments are quoted as their own lines.

DimensionGuidance
Start from the packed productProduct plus its own retail box plus void fill, plus clearance. Shippers that are tight against a retail box crush the corners that the customer sees
Pallet footprintGive us the pallet size and the stacking height. A carton sized to the pallet is usually cheaper per unit shipped than the smallest carton for a single item
Dimensional weightEmpty volume is billed. Reducing height on a shipper across thousands of parcels usually beats any unit-price negotiation
Board grade versus journeySingle wall for a normally packed parcel, double wall where the carton travels alone or is stacked. Tell us the weight and the route rather than asking for the strongest board by default
Flat-packedSupplied flat in bundles as standard, which keeps inbound volume and storage minimal — the opposite of a rigid box

FAQ

Questions about RSC shipping boxes

Shippers are a landed-cost decision. These are the questions that move the landed number.

Why is there no fixed price band for an RSC?
Because a shipper is quoted on size and board grade, and the board area of a large carton varies too much for a published ladder to be honest. The figure shown on this page is a planning reference taken from the published ladder of this range at the 3,000 pc tier, for a right-sized shipper — it is not a quotation. Send the packed dimensions, the pallet and the volume and you will get an itemised number, including the labelling and the freight as separate lines.
Should the shipping box be branded?
Usually not. An RSC is designed to protect the product between a warehouse and a customer or a fulfilment centre, and it is charged at a cost level that does not support branding. If the customer sees the packaging, put a branded mailer inside the shipper, or use the mailer as the outer box where the product allows it. A one or two colour stamp is the sensible middle route for handling marks and channel requirements.
When is an RSC the wrong choice?
When it is the box the customer opens. Also when the product is fragile in a way that needs structure rather than board strength — a die-cut insert or a tray is the answer, not a heavier flute. And where you are shipping a single light item in high volume, a right-sized mailer generally beats a shipper plus void fill on both cost and unboxing.
Can you deliver to Amazon FBA or my 3PL?
Yes. We prepare the shipment for the destination: right-sized cartons with the fill you ask for, barcode and FNSKU labelling, carton marking and a packing list that matches what the warehouse expects to receive. Delivery can go to FBA, a 3PL or your own facility, and freight — sea, air or express — is quoted as its own line so you can see the landed cost rather than only the ex-works price.

Corrugated Mailer BoxVolume driver

Corrugated Mailer Box

A one-piece corrugated box that closes without tape and opens without a knife, supplied flat so it costs almost nothing to ship or store. E-flute is the printed, foldable profile; B-flute is the stronger one for boxes that travel with little inside. This is the highest-repurchase line we make and one of the most competitive, so we hold a specification stable between runs — but it is a volume line with a moderate margin, and it only becomes a good one once the box carries your own artwork inside and is right-sized to the product.

Subscription Box with Printed InteriorInside print

Subscription Box with Printed Interior

A corrugated mailer built the way a brand product is built: full-colour litho-laminated artwork outside and inside, a printed insert card, and a size that matches the assortment rather than a stock carton. The interior print is the reason to buy it — it is the surface the customer photographs when the box opens, and it is the single cheapest thing that turns a parcel into a brand. The honest trade-off is the MOQ: litho lamination starts at 1,000 pcs, so this is a format for a programme, not a first test order.

Folding Carton / Retail CartonRetail shelf

Folding Carton / Retail Carton

A flat-packed cardstock carton with no flute in it: the least expensive structure we make per unit, and the one shelf space is actually built around. It suits retail and FMCG-style products that need identity and a barcode more than they need protection in transit. Be realistic about the economics — this is the most price-compressed category in packaging, artwork does the differentiating, and it is worth buying from us when it belongs to a wider packaging programme rather than as a one-off run.
