Overview
A foldable magnetic box is a magnetic rigid box with a different base engineering. Instead of a turned base tray, the walls are scored and the base is assembled with a folding locking panel, so the box ships flat and is opened up — by hand or by a simple jig — at the packing line. The lid is still a turned rigid lid with magnets, which means the part the customer interacts with is a rigid lid, and the floor of the box is where the cost and the freight advantage live. The structure is the answer to the biggest weakness of premium rigid packaging: assembled boxes are mostly air, and you pay container rates on that air.
This is not a light decision, so be clear about what changes. A foldable base is less rigid underfoot than a turned tray, which is why we usually specify a platform or an insert on top of it for anything with real weight. The wrap is scored and folded along the wall lines, so repeated assembly and disassembly will eventually show along the creases, and very heavy contents are better served by a standard turned base. What you gain is freight volume — collapsible construction can cut the volume a rigid box occupies in the container substantially, which often moves the landed cost more than a few cents of unit price ever will.

Variants
Four scored walls that fold up inside the locked base. The most common version and the one with the biggest freight saving.
A turned magnetic lid over a folding base — our default recommendation, because the part that is handled and photographed stays rigid.

Materials
A foldable box is the same material family as a standard rigid box, but the wrap does more work — it has to survive being folded along set lines without cracking.

Sizing
A foldable box is sized like a magnetic box, but the folding base adds two constraints you should decide before the die is cut.
