The same navy shell, with gold in the mark instead

Same shell as our brushed-edge box; what changes is where the metal goes. Here the foil is a single stamped mark rather than a band around the lid, which makes it the configuration most buyers actually order: one die, one stamping pass, and the brand mark in gold on matte navy. Priced on the magnetic band, indicative $1.50–2.30/pc at 500 pcs, with the die and the stamped area quoted as their own lines.

Overview

About this navy rigid gift box with gold foil logo

Hot foil stamping is a straightforward process that produces a result no ink can match. A heated die is pressed onto foil laid over the wrapped board; the foil transfers only where the die contacts it and leaves a fine impression behind. The cost therefore splits in two: the die, a one-off tooling line that is reused on every reorder, and the stamped area, which is charged per unit and does not care how many logos are in it. On a matt navy wrap the gold reads warm and saturated, and because the foil sits on top of the surface rather than sinking into it, the mark stays crisp on a textured stock where a printed highlight would break up.

This is our own box, and the gold mark on it is ours. We keep it because it answers the question buyers ask most often at quoting stage — what does foil look like on the substrate I am considering — without either of us having to guess from a swatch. The honest trade-offs: foil is not ink, so it cannot do a photographic or soft-gradient mark, and fine strokes below roughly 0.2mm fill in or break. Foil over a crease or a fold tends to lift and craze, so it is normally kept clear of scoring. And a large stamped area costs more than a small one on every single unit, which is why the mark on our sample is deliberately moderate in size — the version we would quote you first.

  • One die, one stamping pass — the lowest-cost way to put metal on a box
  • Gold foil on a matt navy wrap: warm, opaque and unaffected by the print underneath
  • The mark is our own CW Packing identity, replaced one for one by your artwork
  • Die is a one-off tooling line, reused on every reorder
  • Foil area, insert and lamination are quoted as separate lines

Variants

Configurations we build most often

Foil area, not logo count

Foil is priced by stamped area, so two small marks cost about the same as one medium one and a full-face block costs far more. Tell us the mark's size in millimetres rather than the number of logos and the line item becomes predictable.

Metallic ink instead of foil

A printed metallic ink is a cheaper way to get a gold tone and needs no die, but it is flatter, it shades across a large area and it reads as print rather than metal under a light. For a fine mark on a dark surface, foil is normally worth the die.

Foil combined with emboss or deboss

The same die can raise or recess the mark as it stamps, so the logo is felt before it is read. A debossed-and-foiled mark is our most requested single upgrade on this shell, and it is quoted as part of the die line.

Foil on the base or interior

A second, smaller stamp inside the lid or on the base is common on gift and subscription boxes. It is a separate pass and a separate line.

Closure: magnetic or friction fit

The box in the photograph is magnetic. The same exterior with a friction-fit lid and base sits on the lower band at $1.20–1.80/pc at 500 pcs; the foil is quoted as its own line under either closure.

Interior

Folded paper tray as standard, or a die-cut foam or velvet-wrapped tray in navy or a contrast tone. Interior print is a separate press pass.

Materials

What the gold is sitting on, and what that changes

Two decisions drive how foil reads: the surface it stamps onto, and the foil itself. The board underneath barely shows through either, so this is where the money should go.

OptionWhat it means
Matte-laminated navy wrapThe surface in our sample. A low-sheen dark ground gives the foil maximum contrast without the glare a gloss surface throws back at a camera.
Soft-touch laminated wrapA deeper velvet-matte surface. Foil appears to sit further off the box and the contrast is stronger, at a slightly higher cost per unit.
Textured or linen-embossed stockThe grain shows through the foil and gives the mark a broken, hand-made edge. Some brands want exactly that; on fine detail it costs legibility, so test it on the sample.
Bright gold hot foilThe standard metallic. Highly reflective, so it reads gold from a distance and nearly white when it catches a light straight on.
Brushed or matt gold foilA quieter, directional metal finish that holds its colour across viewing angles. Costs more per stamped area and photographs more consistently.
1.5mm / 2.0mm greyboardThe core. Foil needs a surface that does not flex under the die, so larger lids are specified at the heavier board even though the foil itself does not care.
Folded paper, foam or velvet trayThe interior. Cheapest is a folded paper tray; foam and velvet-wrapped trays set the presentation height and are quoted as their own line.

Best for

What a single gold mark is good for

Beauty, skincare and fragrance

A restrained gold mark on a dark box is the default premium language in this category, and one stamped logo keeps the finishing line small.

Jewellery and watches

Gold on matt navy under warm shop lighting is the most flattering combination for small metal goods and reads well in a product photograph.

Corporate and client gifting

One mark, one colour, repeated annually off the same die — the cheapest repeatable premium finish we quote.

Spirits, tea and premium food gifting

A single gold stamp carries a heritage look without a full printed wrap, which suits producers who want the material to do the talking.

Subscription and launch editions

A die is a one-off cost, so a monthly or seasonal box can change its artwork and keep the same gold mark in the same place.

Sizing

Mark size, positioning and clearance

On a foiled box the mark is the only thing most people see, so its size and position matter more than the box dimensions do. These are the numbers we settle before the die is cut.

DimensionGuidance
Smallest legible detailKeep strokes above roughly 0.2mm and avoid type below about 6pt. Below that the foil bridges, fills in or breaks up, and it will look like a print fault.
Mark size on a lidA mark between 20mm and 60mm across reads as a logo on a 25×20cm lid. Larger than that it becomes a graphic and the stamped-area line climbs with it.
Position and clearanceKeep the mark 10mm clear of the lid edge and off any score line. Foil over a crease lifts and crazes, so on a wrap-around layout the mark is placed on a flat panel.
Insert clearanceAllow 3–5mm around a rigid product and 5–8mm on foam. The tray sets the product height, and that height sets the box depth and the freight.
Freight and packingAssembled rigid boxes are mostly air. If the run is large or going by sea, ask for the collapsible version quoted alongside the assembled one and compare landed cost.

FAQ

Foil stamping, answered without the mystique

The two lines that decide foil cost, and the cases where foil is the wrong answer.

How is foil priced — per stamp or per logo?
Per stamped area. One 40mm mark and four 10mm marks cost roughly the same to stamp, so the number of logos is not the variable; how much surface the foil covers is. On top of that there is a one-off die, which is quoted against your artwork and reused on every reorder — which is why a second run costs less finishing per unit than the first.
Is this foil or metallic ink?
Foil. The gold mark on our own box is a foil transfer from a heated die, which is why it has a slight impression you can feel and a metal finish that does not shade across the surface. Metallic ink is a print pass: cheaper, no die, but flatter and less tolerant of a dark background. We quote both against the same artwork if you want to see the difference.
Why does the gold look different from what I see on screen?
Because foil is a reflective metal rather than a colour. It changes with the light and the viewing angle, and a monitor cannot show that. The only reliable approval is the physical sample, which is why we send one with the actual foil and the actual wrap before the run.
Is this your own packaging?
Yes. The navy box and the gold mark in the photograph are CW Packing's own configuration, produced on the partner lines we use for client orders and photographed as it came off them. There is no customer packaging on this page and no fabricated reference behind it; the mark is simply our own, in the position and foil your artwork would use.
This configuration is the wrong choice if…
…you want a photographic, gradient or fine-line mark, which foil physically cannot do, or your run is so small that the die spread across each unit does not make sense, or the box is a low-cost container where a printed mark is enough. If you simply want metal on a box as cheaply as possible, ask us for metallic ink and the honest comparison — and if the answer is a lid & base box to save 25–30% and spend it on finishing instead, we will tell you.
